Does zakaat have to be paid on gifts?
Question:
Does zakaat have to be paid on gifts?
That is gift items that were not purchased by my husband or myself for me?
Answer:
Wa Alaikum As Salaam,
If the gifts are in the form of jewellery and they are gold and silver, then Zakaah will be paid on them if they reach the nisaab (on its own) or when added to other jewellery that you possess. If these gifts are not in the form of jewellery, but are household items etc., then Zakaat will not be paid on them.
