Wedding rings for men and women.

Q. What is the ruling on wedding rings for both men and women in islam?

A. Giving a ring as a gift is allowed in Islam and there is no prohibition for it, especially when a husband gives his wife a ring and a wife gives her husband a ring. However, to officially deem this to be a wedding ring which must be given upon marriage is not in accordance with Islamic teachings.

As such, rings can be exchanged between both spouses on their marriage, however, the significance of it being called a wedding ring should be detached. It can be a part of the Mahr or it can simply be a gift from one to the other – both are allowed. However, to lay emphasis on the fact that they are ‘wedding rings’ which must be exchanged, is totally un-Islamic.

And Allah knows best.
