Using ‘Jumuah Mubarak’ As A Greeting

Question: Assalaamu alaikum,

Is it wrong for us to greet each other by saying  ‘Jummah mubarak’ ?

What is the view with regards to this greeting?

Jazakallah khair

Answer: Wa Alaikum As Salaam,

‘Jumuah Mubarak’ means blessed Jumuah, and by saying this, one is simply saying to another, ‘May you have a blessed Jumuah’. This in reality, is a supplication, and hence, it is not wrong for one to say this to another, since the day of Jumuah itself is a very blessed day and it is permissible for one to supplicate for another in this manner.

However, it will be wrong to establish this as a fixed greeting on the day of Jumuah, and to make it a common practice where it becomes a custom among the Muslims, since this has not been evident as a customary greeting from the Prophet (s.a.w), nor from the Sahabahs, Tabi’een and Atba’ut Tabieen. Even though they all understood and knew the great virtues and blessings of the day of Jumuah, they did not greet each other with ‘Jumuah Mubarak’. Instead, even on the day of Jumuah, they greeted one another with ‘As Salaamu Alaikum’.

Therefore, from the angle of making a dua (supplication) for another person that he/she has a blessed Jumuah, there is no harm in saying ‘Jumuah Mubarak’.

However, it will be wrong to establish it as a customary practice and a fixed greeting for the day of Jumuah.

And Allah Knows Best.
