Practicing yoga.

Q. Is it ok for muslims to do yoga?

A. Although Yoga may be viewed as a form of exercise and relaxing one’s body and mind, it is nevertheless connected to non Islamic religious teachings. I have personally asked about it and was told that at times the instructor would ask others (those who are doing the yoga) to chant certain names and also to form certain things in their mind, which they must focus on while meditating. These I have found to be against the teachings of Islam and would therefore not be permissible.

If it is only a matter of exercise which does not entail any of that which I have described, then there is no harm in doing it, once it is free from all other prohibitions given in the shariah.

And Allah knows best.
