Observing Qadha Of Fardh Fast

Question: Assalamu alaikum,
If a person still has fard fast that they missed during the month of Ramadan to keep back, can they fast any of the recommended fast with the intention for that (eg 10th Muharram or day of Arafah) or do they have to keep back their fard fast before doing of the sunnah ones?

Answer: Wa Alaikum As Salaam,

Seeing that they still have compulsory fasts that are yet to be made up, they should first complete those before observing the Sunnah fasts. If they kept any of the recommended Sunnah fasts, then it will be valid and accepted (even though they may not have made up for missed fardh fast as yet).

However, if they kept one of the missed Ramadhan fast on a day which is one of the Sunnah days of fasting with the intention of making up for a fardh fast, then only the fardh fast will be valid and accepted. The fast will not be regarded as Sunnah fast. Only one intention will be considered.

And Allah Knows Best.
