Is Sofia/Saufia an Islamic name?

I would like to find out if the name sofia/saufia is a good islamic name? I found it on a muslim baby name website but i would like to make sure.

Assalaamu Alaikum,

The word Sofia or Sufiya is spelt in Arabic with the letter (ص) and is written as صوفية (Sofiya). This word means ‘Sufi’ or Islamic Mysticism, and is not one that is put as a person’s name. It is sometimes given as a title or name used for a person who follows a Sufi order, but is not normally given as an official name to a person.

A similar name is Safiya, spelt in Arabic as صفية which means pure. Another name is Saafiya spelt in Arabic as صافية which means virtuous.

As for the word ‘Sofia’ which has the meaning of ‘beautiful’ as mentioned in some books on Islamic baby names, this is not from an Arabic origin. It is stated that the origin of this name is Spanish. If you want to put this name for the baby, then you should know that it is a name for a female, and that it has no Arabic origin. Since, the meaning is good, you can use it if you wish.

And Allah Knows Best.
