Congregational Dua.

Q. Can you tell me if congregational dua is compulsory, desirable or practiced during the times of the Holy Prophet (s.a.w.) or if it is an innovation, like in shukrhanas, after daily congregational salaat, for kids writing exam, etc?

A. Congregational dua is permissible and at times desirable. It is evident in authentic traditions that the Prophet (S.A.S) made dua while the companions joined in his dua. It is also evident in sound traditions that he encouraged one to say ‘Ameen’ to the duas of others and at times made duas collectively with the companions. As such, it cannot be called an innovation.

When people gather together and they wish to supplicate to Allah collectively for any special reason or simply to beg Allah for His forgiveness and blessings, it is allowed in Islam.

And Allah knows best.
