Commiting wrongful acts in the past.

Q. I was very young at the time and I went over to a very good friend on Divali night. They were doing their prayers and I was invited to sit with them, they shared out flowers and I took one. I just sat there while they did their stuff, at the end they put their flowers in front of a picture of a god and touched the picture taking turns, when it came to me I just put the flower and that was it. I did not say anything or touch anything. At that time I was not very knowledgeable about islam and its laws, etc. I was about 13 or so. I would like to know if my actions that day made me commit shirk of any kind?

A. Your actions on that particular day did not bring about shirk on your part. Although it was a wrong and sinful act, it does amount to shirk. You should beg Allah to forgive you for this action and make a firm resolution that you would not do such again.

Insha Allah, Allah who is most forgiving and merciful will forgive you, since you were totally ignorant of the consequences of your actions. The Holy Quran states:- ‘Your Lord has written Mercy for Himself, so that if any of you does wrong/sin in ignorance, and thereafter repent and does righteous deeds, then Surely, He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful (sura Al An’am(6) verse 54).

And Allah knows best.
