Fatawa concerning Qurbani

What is to be done if on the morning of Qurbani i end up with the bare Nisaab?

If on Eid day I end up bare nisaab but the cost of an animal at that time is more than the nisaab , what shall I do?

Wa Alaikum Assalaam,

If the cost of an animal at that time is more than the nisaab, and you do not have the amount of money to purchase an animal, then look to see if you can take a share in a large animal. If this is too costly and you cannot afford it, then Qurbani will not be essential upon you.

Method of Sacrifice for Qurbani

Salaams,
Can you please give us the daleel for the method of sacrifice you have outlined so I can inform my Jamaah that it was the practice of the prophet (uwbp) and his companions.

Wa Alaikum Assalaam,

الجواب و بالله التوفيق

Jabir Bin Abdullah (R.A) narrates:

‘The Prophet (S.A.S) sacrificed two horned rams which were white with black markings and had been castrated. When he made them face the Qiblah, he said, ‘Inni Wajahtu Wajhiya Lilladhi Fatarasamawati Wal Ard Hanifanw Wa Ma Ana Minal Mushrikeen. Inna Salati Wa Nusuki Wa Mahyaya Wa Mamati Lillahi Rabbil Aalameen. Laa Shareeka Lahu Wa Bi Dhalika Umirtu Wa Ana Minal Muslimeen.’

‘Allahuma Minka wa Laka, BIsmillah; Allahu Akbar.’ (Sunan of Abu Dawood, Hadith 2789).

The above tradition shows that when the Prophet (S.A.S) did the sacrifice, he made the animals face the Qiblah. After this, he recited ‘Inni Wajahtu Wajhiya Lilladhi … until the end.

Then he recited: ‘. Inna Salati Wa Nusuki Wa Mahyaya Wa Mamati …. Until the end.

After this, he said, ‘Allahuma minka wa laka.’ Then he said ‘Bismillah Allahu Akbar’ and slaughtered the animal.

It is also narrated that at the end, the Prophet (S.A.S) said, ‘Allahumma An Muhammad Wa Ummatihi Man Shahida laka Bit Tawheed Wa Li Bil Balagh.’ (Mustarak of Hakim from Aisha (R.A) and Abu Hurairah (R.A).

Translation, ‘O Allah! This is from Muhammad and from his Ummah. These who bear witness to Tawheed and bear witness to my message.’

It is narrated that when Ali (R.A) slaughtered the Qurbani animals, he used to say, ‘Allahuma Taqabal Min Fulan.’ “ O Allah accept this from so and so.’ (Ibn Abi Ad Dunya – Kanzul Umaal, Hadith 12681).

Abu Talha (R.A) narrated that the Prophet (S.A.S) scarificed two rams. When he sacrificed the first one, he said, “O Allah! Accept this from Muhammad and the family of Muhammad.’ When he sacrificed the second, he said, ‘O Allah! Accept this from those who believe in me from my Ummah.’ (Tibrani  in Al Kabeer – Kanzul Umaal, Hadith 12691).

Questions on Qurbani

As-Salaamu ‘Alaikum,

May Almighty Allaah continue to bless everyone associated with your institute.

On behalf of an elderly relative, there is an issue that needs to be answered. If one can afford Qurbani but is not able to participate in it physically due to poor health, and there is no help coming forward from relatives to do the actual cutting and weighing, etc.  is there a means by which a “special” zakaat is given (to the poor) to make up for this Qurbani? The person is not interested and definitely DOES NOT want to send any money abroad for Qurbani to be done. We would GREATLY appreciate advice from your point of view.

Jazaak Allaah.

Wa Alaikum Assalaam,

الجواب و بالله التوفيق

If a person can afford a Qurbani, then Qurbani must be done. Since there is no help coming from relatives etc., the person can give the money for Qurbani (i.e a share in a large animal can be paid for) and an arrangement can be made that the person collects the meat or it is shared out to the poor and needy.

There is no special zakat or sadaqa which can be given to make up for the Qurbani. If you need help in this regard, you can call the Darul Uloom at 665-1442, so that Qurbani can be done.

If my Aqiqah is not completed can I still do the Qurbani sacrifice?

Asalaamu Alaikum .

Q: I would like to know if my Aqiqah is not completed can I still do the Qurbani sacrifice?

Wa Alaikum Assalaam,

Yes, you can still do the qurbani sacrifice. In fact, if you have the means to do so, you should do it, and if you have the Nisaab of Zakaat during any of the 3 days of Qurbaani, then it will be essential for you to do the Qurbaani.

is qurbani compulsory on me?

Assalamu Alaikum,

Someone asked me if they are not working and is a single parent, and has a small savings for emergency purposes. Is qurbani compulsory on him? What is the reply? Jazakallah Khair!!

Wa Alaikum As Salaam

If during the days of Qurbani, the savings are lower than the Nisaab, then Qurbaani will not be compulsory on him. If however, his savings have reached the Nisaab, then Qurbaani will be essential upon him. The Nisaab is presently $2,066.55 TT.

Nafl Qurbani With Various Intentions

Question: (1) I want to give a nafl Qurbani with a lawful personal intention to be fulfilled. Now, can I combined niyyat (intention) for Nabi (Sallallahu Alayhi Wa Sallam) and include deceased relatives and other Muslims in the reward of one animal ? ( 3 intentions in one animal ), or doI have to make separate intention for my own personal intention for nafl qurbani  ? ( 1 intention 1 animal )
make dua for me.

Answer: Assalaamu Alaikum,

Since it is a nafl qurbani, you can combine the niyyat (intention) for the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Was Sallam), deceased relatives and other Muslims in the reward of one animal.

Distribution Of Qurbani Meat

Question: As Salam Alaikum Mufti sab.

Generally we make 3 parts of gosth and distribute the 2 parts between poor and relatives. If the qurbani is given in the name of huzoor or other persons like parents and grand parents name with the money from my income. what should be the appropriate way of distributing the qurbani gosth.

Should all the gosth be distributed as sadqa between poor???

Please provide ruling over this common circumstance.

Thanking you,

Answer: Wa Alaikum As Salam,

The distribution will be in the same manner as your Qurbani. That is, you can divide it into three parts, and distribute one part to the poor and needy, one part to the relatives and keep one part for you and your family.

Cutting/Clipping Hair/Nails For Someone Doing Qurbani

Question: When should we stop cutting the hair and nails?

Answer: Assalamu Alaikum,
A person should have stopped doing this on Thursday 25th September (night) when the new moon was sighted to commence the month of Dhul Hijjah. He will the begin to cut/trim hair/nails when he sacrifices his animal in the 10th of Dhul Hijjah. This action however, is only Mustahab (commendable).
