can divorce occur over the phone?

Q:I was reading up on marriage and was curious. If two people get nikka but never lived together and never consummated the marriage went on to live separate lives but then the wife calls and ask for a divorce over the phone is that divorce valid???
Wa Alaikum Assalaam,
If the husband gives the divorce over the phone, then the divorce will occur and she will be considered as being divorced.
