dua hands 12Dua (Supplication) The Weapon of A Believer

When the Adhan of Maghrib is called

Hazrat Ummi Salamah (RA) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (SAW) taught me to say at the time of the Maghrib Azan:

Allahumma Inna Hadha Iqbaalu LailIka, Wa Idbaaru NahaarIka, Wa Aswaatu Duaatika, Fag firlii

Oh Allah, this is the hour of the advent of Your night and the retreat of Your day and of the cry of Your petitioners. So forgive me.

tasb 12Zikrullah – Remembrance of Allah

Hazrat Anas bin Malik (RA) said we were sitting with the Messenger of Allah (SAW) in a circle when a man came and give Salaams to the Messenger of Allah (SAW) and the people (Assalaamu Alaikum). The Messenger of Allah (SAW) said, Wa alaikumu Salam, Wa Rahmatulaahi wa barakaatu. So he sat and said:

“All praise is for Allah in abundance, pure and blessed, such as our Lord loves and is pleased with it.”

Upon this the Messenger of Allah (SAW) said, “what did you say?”, So he repeated it to the Messenger of Allah (SAW) jus as he said.

The Prophet (SAW) said, “By Him who holds my life in His Hand! Ten angels jumped towards this expression vying with each other to record it but they could not decide how they should write it down. So they consulted the One who possesses majesty and greatness (Allah) Who said to them, “Write the words down as My slave has spoken.”

muh 12Pearls from the blessed Messenger of Allah

Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Prophet (may peace and blessings be upon him) said: Certainly Allah is pure, He does not accept except those things which are pure and good. Certainly Allah has commanded the believers with that which he has commanded the Prophets (upon them be peace). Allah has said in the Quran: “Oh Messengers! Eat/ Consume from the good and pure things and do good deeds for certainly I am most knowledgeable of those things which you do.” And Allah has also said: “Oh those who believe eat/consume from the pure and good things of what we have sustained you.” Then the Prophet (upon whom be peace) mentioned concerning a man who was on a very long journey, dishevelled, covered in dust, extending his hands to the heavens (saying) Oh my Master! Oh my Master! (Supplicating and begging from Allah in such a condition) and his food is unlawful, his clothing is unlawful and he is nourished with unlawful, so how then will he be answered on account of that.

Narrated by Imam Muslim # 1015, page 409, publisher: Darus Salam.

This narration highlights a few very fundamental and important guidelines for all Muslims.

The first point is that, all the Prophets who were sent on the face of the earth were men who walked the earth and ate from it. Thus, no one can say that the messengers were angels so one cannot do and fulfil what they did and were commanded to do.

The second point is that, we are all on some degree, representatives or inheritors of the Prophets (Upon them be peace and blessings). Whatever the Prophets were commanded, we have been commanded with the same. There are however very few things that were commanded to the Prophets only and not for us, which have been highlighted by the scholars of Islaam

The third and most fundamental point is the importance of halaal sustenance. Allah has placed nourishment in food for mankind and based on the source of nourishment will determine the outcome of what a person will do with this energy. If we eat from the good things (halaal and pure) then we will be strengthened to do good and righteous actions become easy for us. On the contrary, when a person is nourished with haraam and harmful things, then he will be strengthened to do wrong and sins will become easy for him.

The other lesson learned from the tradition is that Allah does not accept the supplication and worship of one who consumes/uses unlawful things.

The Prophet (May peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned a man who because of his state would have had his duas readily accepted. He was a traveller having travelled a long distance. The difficulties undertaken in the journey causes his hairs to be dishevelled and the body covered with dust. He looks like a beggar, deserving mercy and compassion and in this state he calls on his lord for help and goodness, saying ‘O my Lord’ ‘O my Lord’.

Notwithstanding this pitiable state his dua is rejected by Allah because he was nourished from haram (unlawful means) and his clothing was also unlawful.

This tells us that we must avoid every type of haram, whether it is food, drink or clothing and most importantly we must ensure that we do not have a haram source of income.

qur 12Sura As Sajdah (The Prostration)

With respect to the treatment which will be awarded to each group in the hereafter, verses 19 and 20 state:

19. As for those who believe and do righteous good deeds, for them are Gardens (Paradise) as an entertainment, for what they used to do.

20. And as for those who are Fasiqun(disbelievers and disobedient to Allah), their abode will be the Fire, every time they wish to get away therefrom, they will be put back thereto, and it will be said to them: “Taste you the torment of the Fire which you used to deny.”

Here, Allah explains why an unbeliever cannot be like the believer. On one hand, a believer has firm faith in Allah. He does good deeds, and is obedient to his Creator. On account of this, he becomes beloved to Allah and is treated with love, mercy and compassion. He continues to gain Allah’s blessings and kindness in this world, and in the hereafter, he achieves Paradise. This will be a hospitable gift and an entertainment for him (the believer), as an honor from Allah for having believed in Him and (having) done good actions.

On the other hand, a disbeliever denies Allah. He is disobedient to Him, and rejects His prophets. On account of this, he is disliked by Allah, and incurs upon himself the wrath, anger and punishment of Allah. He continues to gain the displeasure of Allah in this world; and in the hereafter, he is thrown into the blazing fire of Hell which shall be his permanent abode. His state in the fire would be in such a manner that his hands would be in shackles and his feet would be tied. The flames of the fire shall lift him to the top (of the fire), but the angels shall repress them and forcefully put them down. While being lifted to the top by the flames, he would hope to get out of the fire, but shall be returned to his place in Hell. This is what is meant by the verse, ‘every time they wish to get away therefrom, they will be put back thereto’.[1]

Having being suppressed in the fire, the keepers of Hell shall say to them, ‘Taste you the torment of the fire which you used to deny’. The angels shall rebuke them in this manner and shall remind them that the torment that they will receive is the same which they used to deny in the world and used to make a mockery of.
